Never Say Die

I originally wrote this for a buddy as a little present. At the last minute I decided to enter it in the VFB contest this year. That's why it took me so long to post it.
"Boy, it's nights like this that I know why,
Lovers like you and me will never say die.
'Cause there's a long line of folks giving up on love,
So many hearts get broken in the push and shove.
I'll believe in you for the rest of my life,
Baby, lovers like you and me will never say die."
~ Dixie Chicks, "Never Say Die"
Dianna rolled onto her side, resting on her elbow, and looked at the sleeping figure next to her. She smiled to herself. They'd been through so much, but they were just as much in love as they'd ever been. Even after all the doubts, all the fights, all the tears.
She thought back to the first time he'd been away for work. After the first week she thought she'd never last. In fact, she'd had so many doubts during those two months that she tried to break it off four or five times. Every time she did, he would convince her to wait just a little longer. He knew that if she could hang on until he got home that she could make it every time he had to be away. She wasn't as sure as him, but she tried for his sake. And he'd been right.
That's not to say that he'd always been that sure. He had his share of doubts as well. Especially when they first moved in together. They got on each others nerves so bad. It was a long, frustrating road to the compromises they ultimately reached.
Then there were the horrible fights and the short break-up over her...jealousy about his relationship with his ex-wife. Sure, he should speak to her and be civil, maybe even nice because of there son, but the way Dianna saw it, they were way too friendly and affectionate with each other.
Dianna wasn't normally the jealous type, but she couldn't help the feeling in this case. Still, she tried not to show it. She might have the odd comment or question, but she never actually accused him of anything. Until that one fight. For some reason she couldn't hold her tongue that one time. She regretted the question as soon as she uttered it.
"You're screwing her, aren't you?"
He was appalled that she'd actually said it. "Di! You know I would never do that."
"Don't lie to me, Viggo."
"I have never lied to you, you know that."
"How would I know that? Your job is to lie."
"Please. That is a bad excuse on your part. You know how I feel about lying to the people I care about."
"And do you care about me? Really? Or is it all part of the 'Viggo Mortensen pack-of-lies'?"
"I love you Dianna. I really do," he sighed. "But until and unless you can get over this jealousy of yours, I don't think we can see each other anymore." he started for her front door.
"Viggo...wait..."
"I'm sorry, Di. I can't be with someone who's going to doubt me every time I talk to my ex-wife. It won't work." With that he walked out the door. She almost went after him, but she knew he was right. If he stayed, her jealousy would just make them end up hating each other. And she didn't want that.
She choked back tears at the memory. Those had been the worst few weeks of her life. She'd cried almost every day. She worked so hard not to be jealous and when she proved it to him, he took her back.
Things were so much better between them since then. Sure, they still had the occasional fight, but they were doing even better than some of their friends. In the few years they had been together so many of their friends' relationships had ended. One couple had even married and divorced in that short time. They may have some rough patches ahead of them yet, but Di knew that they were going to make it. She wasn't sure how, but she knew just by looking at him as he slept beside her.
Di lay her head in the crook of his shoulder and draped her hand on his chest. The slow beating of his heart and the gentle rise and fall of his chest lulled her back to sleep. As she drifted off she felt his hand reach up and stroke her hair. And once again she knew that, no matter what, they would make it.
THE END.
