Chapter 18
Anita traced her fingers over Karl's chest as they lay in bed. "I'm leaving in a couple days."
"When?"
"Saturday morning. We have to be at the airport at four-thirty in the morning." Karl let the information sink in for a moment before he said anything. Anita was beginning to worry.
"Do you want to spend the night tonight?"
"Really?"
"Really." He smoothed her hair. "I can't believe you're leaving already. I don't want you to go."
"I don't want to go. But I have to go home sometime. And my visa expires Monday. Besides that, I have to go start my new job in a week."
"In that case... Can I come home with you?" Anita laughed at him. "I just don't want to give you up yet."
"Karl, you knew this was going to end soon. Why'd you go and get attached?"
"I tried not to, but you're so great. Don't tell me this is going to be easy for you. I know better than that. I mean, look how you reacted to Nat." She tried to hide her red face from him. "Okay, let's not get into this. Let's just try and enjoy the next couple of days."
"Aren't you on the schedule for the next few days?"
"Yeah, but I'll see you when I get done working. Won't I?"
"If you want to."
"I do. I wish I could take you with me, but it's a closed set. Only immediate family and spouses are allowed on." He sighed. "Why don't you just stay here until you leave? You can still spend your days with your friends, but you can spend the nights with me."
"I don't know, Karl..." She sounded a bit uneasy with the suggestion.
"You don't have to if you don't want to. I just meant... I wouldn't mind if you stayed here with me until you left. We really haven't gotten to spend much time together."
"I'll stay tonight, but I'll have to think about staying the rest of the week."
“I can live with that.” He hugged her tight. “Should you call your friends and let them know what’s going on so they won’t be worried?”
“I probably should.” Karl got up and got her the phone so she could call the hotel.
