~ Chapter 8 ~
The next morning, Katorea calls Paul. When he answers the phone, he doesn’t sound very well. He is talking quietly and a little broken. He sounds as if he is in pain. “Hello,” Paul says, pain in his voice.
“Oh, my God! Are you okay, Paul? You don’t sound so good.”
“I’m fine. Just a bad headache, that’s all. I’ll be fine.”
“Are you sure? Do you want to cancel for tonight?”
“No!” he rushes. He continues, “I’ll be okay. I was thinking, why don’t I pick you up at about eight o’clock? We can spend a nice quiet evening together. I know a great little place.”
“That sounds wonderful. Should I dress up?”
“No, just dress how you usually do. In fact, why don’t you wear that outfit you wore when we met you? I like that one. It looks good on you.”
“Okay. Well, that’s what I was calling about. I guess that’s all.”
“Okay. I’ll see you at eight. Bye.”
“Bye, Paul.”
When Paul hangs up, he goes to take a shower. He looks in the mirror and sees that he has a black eye and can’t bend his left arm very well. He has bruises all over, especially his face and neck. How is he going to explain that to Katorea? He decides that if he really wants things to work out, he should tell her the truth.
The boys spend the day at the studio. There is a certain coldness between George and Paul. They don’t speak to each other unless they have to. George is in worse shape than Paul is. He has a cut in the corner of his mouth, a black eye, and bruises all over. His right knee is in pain and he can’t walk without a limp. His throat has finger shaped bruises and his neck is stiff. They are both wrecks. After a long day at the studio, the boys go home and put their instruments away. Paul leaves without saying where he is taking Katorea. He doesn’t want anyone showing up ruining his evening.
He arrives at Katorea’s house at eight o’clock sharp. Her mother Marilyn answers the door. “May I help you?”
“Is Katorea home, ma’am?”
“Yes she is. Won’t you come in?” She ushers Paul in and offers him a seat. As he sits down on the couch, Marilyn calls to Katorea. “Kat, dear, you have a visitor.”
“Just a moment mother, I’m coming.” She comes downstairs and sees Paul sitting in the living room.
As she comes into the room, Paul stands up. He hands her a single red rose and says, “Your chariot awaits, milady.”
“Goodbye, mother. I’ll be home before too late.” Paul gets the door for her and waves goodbye to her mother.
He is a perfect gentleman the whole evening. They go to a little out-of-the-way diner. They eat dinner there and after little talking, go out to a secluded little spot. Paul parks the car and they talk for a little bit. “What happened to your eye?”
“I didn’t want to tell you, but since you asked, I will. George and I got into a fight last night. He’s in worse shape than I am. I didn’t really want to hurt him, but I couldn’t help it. I saw the two of you last night and I got jealous. I waited until you left, then I jumped him. I know I should have talked to him about it instead of resorting to violence, but my emotions got the best of me. John and Ringo tried to stop us, but I wouldn’t let them,” here he hangs his head. “I understand if you want me to take you home. I wouldn’t want to be near me either if I were you.”
“Paul, it’s okay. I don’t want to leave. It may be hard for you to believe, but I’m actually enjoying myself.” She reaches over and turns the radio on. She tunes it to a light jazz station and reaches her hand toward Paul. “Shall we?” He smiles and they get out of the car and dance with the radio playing lightly in the background.
After a couple of songs, Paul gets up his courage. He stops and lifts Katorea’s face to look directly into her eyes. “I know that you love George and could never love me, but that doesn’t change the way I feel. No matter what happens between the two of you I will always have a special place for you in my heart. I will try and accept your relationship with George and I will cope with it the best that I can.” Katorea tries to speak. “No, don’t say anything. Before I take you home, there is just one more thing I would like to do.” He leans down and kisses her passionately. She is so stunned by this action that she doesn’t pull away from him. When he pulls away, she just looks at him. He walks over to the passenger side door and opens it for her. She walks over and gets in the car quietly. Paul gets in the car and takes her home.
Wow, I really was all young and innocent. :p
