Sorry it took so long.
Chapter 23
Olivia’s phone rang at about 2am. She rolled over and answered it. "What?" she asked, half asleep.
"Liv…" It was Anita again.
"Ani, what happened now?"
"I can’t sleep."
"Thinking about him again, are you?"
She nodded, even though her friend couldn’t see her. Then she answered, barely audible, "yeah…."
Olivia sighed. "You’ve gotta stop doing this to yourself, Ani."
"I’m okay. Really."
Olivia sighed. "I know you are." There was no reasoning with Anita when she was thinking of Karl late at night. This had been going on for nearly a year now.
The other girls had begun to completely ignore their phones ringing in the middle of the night. They’d gotten mad at her a few times about her calling just to end up telling them she was fine. Olivia was the only one that would sit up for as long as it would take to get Anita through her funk. Anita was her best friend, had been for a long time, and she wasn’t going to abandon her now. She’d eventually get over Karl and move on. She was already starting to get over him a little. Her middle of the night calls were less frequent, and she cried about him less. One of these days she’d get over him. She had to keep telling herself that. And she had to just take it one day at a time. One night at a time. Then she’d be just one step closer to leaving him behind.
Once Olivia had her calmed down a bit, she’d hang up and sit in the dark, listening to the radio, singing along quietly to herself until she finally got tired enough to sleep.
