Karl and Anita finally have to say goodbye...

Chapter 22

The alarm went off and Anita rolled out of bed. She made her way to the bathroom to take a shower, trying not to wake Karl. He’d said that he wanted to see her off, but she knew he had to be on set by five again this morning. She didn’t want him too tired when he showed up at work. Especially after the night they’d had. The party Karl had thrown together at the last minute had gone pretty well. She got to have some fun with her friends and they’d gotten to meet some of his co-stars at the same time. What little time she’d gotten to spend with each one had proved enlightening. They were all very nice and liked telling her what they’d learned about Karl. Altogether it was a very entertaining evening.

When Anita was finishing her shower, Karl opened the door. “You didn’t wake me up.”

She stepped out of the shower and wrapped a towel around herself. “I thought you could use the sleep. You have to be to work today.”

“But I want to see you off. Just give me a few minutes to shower and get ready and I’ll take you to the airport.” She was about to protest, but he stopped her. “I’m taking you. And that’s final. Now go make sure you have everything around. We need to leave in about fifteen minutes.” She nodded at him and left him in the bathroom.

She hurriedly dressed and checked her luggage as Karl showered. Soon, he was dressed and they were on their way. The whole ride there, they just sat, hand in hand, wishing Anita didn’t have to leave.

They beat Anita’s friends there and decided to wait for them at the gate. They were a little reluctant to say anything, because they knew they’d most likely never see each other again. They just held onto and rained soft kisses on each other. When her friends finally did get there, they left Anita and Karl be, knowing how hard this was for them.

When they got their boarding call, the tears started flowing. Anita didn’t want to leave. Karl reassured her that she’d be fine and hugged her tight. He whispered how much he was going to miss her in her ear, wiped her tears away and kissed her eyelids gently.

“Go on, luv. Your plane’s going to leave without you.” He spoke gently, as if to coax her into leaving. A couple more tears and a nod and she turned to leave. When she ran back to Karl and clung to him, crying, her friends decided they had to intervene. After a few quick goodbyes to him, they herded Anita onto the plane.

Karl stood at the window and watched the plane until the lights faded out of his vision. “Goodbye, Anita…” he whispered as the plane disappeared.
