Chapter 19
After she got off the phone and settled back in next to Karl, Anita looked at him and asked sincerely, “This may be none of my business, but if you told her it was over before you started filming, how’d she know where you kept the spare key?”
Karl furrowed his brow. “Hey, yeah…” He seemed to remember something. “That’s right… About a week after I got here I needed her to bring me some stuff that I had left at her place. I was on set all day and I told her where it was. Don’t worry, first thing tomorrow, I’m finding a new place to put it. That way you won’t be bothered by her again.” He kissed the top of her head.
A little more thinking and something else occurred to her. “And what did she mean by, ‘Enjoy it while it lasts’ and ‘Once he gets his share, he’ll move on to the next pretty young thing that throws herself at him.’?”
“WHAT?!” He sat up fast, nearly dropping her head to the bed. “She said that?? What else did she say to you?” Anita recounted what had happened between the two of them exactly. “That fucking cunt! When you said she stopped by, I figured she didn’t want to believe it was really over, but that was uncalled for.” He reached for the phone on the nightstand and started dialing.
“What are you doing?” Anita didn’t want to be the cause of a big scene.
“I’m telling that bitch off like I should have when I left. She had no right to say something like that to you.” He went back to the phone, which Natalie had answered. “Nat? It’s Karl.” He listened for a moment. “What do I want? You’re the one that came all the way down here to see me. Or more likely to spy on me. Where the hell do you get off speaking to my friends like you did to Anita today?” Anita sat there listening, unable to make out what Natalie said. “I don’t care what you thought or why you were here. You had no fucking right to say what you did. And you especially had no right to say what you did about me. What did I ever do to give you the impression that I would just sleep with any ‘pretty young thing’ that threw herself at me?”
Anita could hear Natalie now, her voice raised as she yelled back at Karl. “Who said that’s what I thought?”
“Anita told me everything you said to her.”
“And you believe that tramp over me? How long have you known her? A few weeks, a month? We were together for a hell of a lot longer than that!”
“Yeah, and I’m starting to wonder why I stuck around that long! It doesn’t matter how long I’ve known her or what the state of our relationship, you had better NEVER speak to her or about her in that way EVER again! Do you hear me?”
“Why’s the whore getting such special treatment from you? Is she the reason you left me?”
“I told you not to speak about her like that ever again. And you know DAMN WELL that YOU are the reason I left you. You and this sudden attitude of yours.”
“MY ATTITUDE??”
He was starting to turn red, and Anita was getting a little scared. She put her hand on his arm to bring him back to then and now. He took a few deep breaths. “You know what? Never mind that. Just don’t show your face around here again. I don’t want to see you or hear that you were anywhere near Wellington. You got me?” She tried to spout some lame question. “YOU GOT ME?”
She sighed angrily. “Yes.”
“Good.” Without another word, and without giving Natalie a chance to respond, he hung up. “God damn her,” he muttered under his breath. Anita ran her hand down his arm. He let out a frustrated sigh and looked at her. “I’m really sorry about what happened today.”
“Don’t worry about it.
No harm done. I know how exes can
be. Trust me.” She smiled at him, which made him laugh with
relief that she wasn’t hurt by it. He
hugged her to him, still laughing.
