Okay, about your pear tree...the only one's I know of FOR SURE to even HAVE thorns are the "ornamental" pears and not the fruitbearing types that are the European and the Asian.
Since it did not fruit for a long time and all, perhaps since it got cut back so badly that one time, it got cross-pollinated somehow by an Asian or European tree ( hey, stranger things HAVE happened in the plant world, trust me ).
OR
what you MAY be thinking are "thorns" may just be very knobby spurs on the branches. Those knobby spurs on them branches will end up being pears, just be patient.
I hope EITHER of those things help you or make sense. Oregon and California are HUGE pear growing regions so yes, I DO know my fruit trees pretty well, babe.
And as for your friend, I am with Pearl but...hey, if you and she are such good friends, she should come around and get over it. Sounds like a dumb reason to be upset to me, anyhow. Tell her to get over herself already for crying out loud. You have MORE IMPORTANT things to worry about right now, like your dad. Tell her to cut you some SERIOUS SLACK!
